Making M Matter

Learning letter names and sounds can be confusing. There is some method to this chaos, and that’s the good news. Following a simple, structured approach can help you build familiarity and comfort with letters and sounds easily.

For instance, let’s take the letter M. Your child may mistake it for an ‘N,’ for example, not just in identifying it, but sounding it out as well. The best way to make it easy is to demonstrate, discuss, practice! Read on to learn how.

Letter M Games – How they Can Help

Games help kids build skills quickly and effectively. These games will allow your child to familiarize themselves with the letter ‘M,’ identify its sound and sight correctly, and show you a thing or two about having fun!

    • M-Match: This is a great game that builds concentration and helps identify letters correctly. Make a grid that contains large and small letters arranged randomly. Ask your child to identify all the ‘M’s, and circle them in one color. Now ask for the ‘m’s to be circled in another. The color differentiation will help them understand the difference between upper and lower-case letters and set the ‘M’s apart from the rest.
    • Sticky M: This is a game of messy fun! Find random pictures of everyday objects and cut them out. Now bring out a large stencil of the letter ‘M’ and keep it handy. Take your child through the various pictures, asking them to call out what they see. Every time they notice an object or a picture that starts with ‘M,’ they set it aside. They can finally make a collage on the letter stencil using the pictures collected. This game helps identify the letter M and the letter sound in different words.
    • M-March: Notice how the word ‘march’ starts with an M? Well, you can get your children to march to your tune too! Read out a series of words slowly. The moment your child notices a word starting with ‘M,’ they march one step forward. Make this a step tougher by asking them to march when the sound is present, even mid-way through the word.
    • Who ‘Me’?: This online letter learning game that can make ‘M’ create more mischief than ever! Your child needs to spot the letter M wherever they can. You can even get them to try with lowercase letters here. These simple games can help cement the sight and sound of ‘M’ firmly.

Tips and Tricks to Better the M’s

There is no defined age or grade when letters and recognition can be taught. Your child will give you enough signals to tell you they are ready. When introducing letters and sounds, remember:

  • The first step is being able to identify the letter correctly. This may either be in the form of picking the correct letter from among a selection or writing down an approximation of the letter shape. Remember that this takes some practice and patience.
  • Letter names, once learned, can be followed by letter sounds. This can be tricky. Children may forget one or the other, may regress, and may start to lose interest suddenly. Do ensure you work at your child’s pace and spend as much time as they need. After all, a good foundation makes a good reader. If you notice your child struggling with sounds and letters, go back a few paces and start over.
  • Avoid being rigid with the letter introduction. While the ABCs give us a pattern around the alphabet, you are in no way compelled to follow it. M is among the easier and more common letters. You could use it at the beginning of the alphabet journey.
  • Remember that M and W mirror one another. M and N, on the other hand, are close in sight and sound. Your child may face a little confusion, and that’s ok. With time, it is almost inevitable that they will get over it. However, a little online practice and some educational games won’t hurt!

Supporting your Reader

Children need a lot of encouragement and support at this stage. Allow them to experiment with letters and sounds, play with their stencils, and just get familiar before you force names and sounds on them.

You will notice that your child learns faster when they have heard words and played with letterforms and shapes. If your child is struggling with the letter M, come back to it another day. Pick another letter instead. Do not let them feel a sense of failure or inability. Let the journey be fun and filled with victories!
