As many of the world's best golfers prepare for the 2024 U.S. Open at historic Pinehurst No. 2, it certainly feels like it's Scottie Scheffler versus the field.

While Scheffler hasn't quite reached the levels of dominance we saw from peak Tiger Woods, he's getting close. The world's No. 1-ranked golfer has won five of his last eight tournaments and has not finished outside of the top 10 since January.

Unsurprisingly, Scheffler is the favorite heading into this year's third major. He's certainly not the only competitor with the skills to claim victory, however. Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa are among the tournament's other favorites and could be worth backing at the current odds.

Here, you'll find a look at some of the top favorites and sleepers to consider ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open.

Scottie Scheffler: +280 to Win

1 of 4

The odds aren't exactly favorable for bettors backing Scheffler. At +280 (bet $100 to win $280), according to DraftKings Sportsbook, the potential payout isn't extreme. The odds are even worse for anyone backing Scheffler to finish in the top five (-140) or the top 10 (-275)—even if those feel like a near guarantee.

Scheffler's worst finish since winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March was an eighth-place tie at the PGA Championship.

However, backing Sfheffler to win could serve as a decent hedge against a long-shot wager. The 27-year-old is fresh off a win at The Memorial, which saw him battle for a one-stroke lead over Morikawa.

"This is a tough place to close out," Scheffler said after the event, per ESPN. "I didn't do a whole lot great today, but I did enough."

Scheffler has felt borderline unstoppable at times during his 2024 run, and there's a good chance he does enough this weekend to claim his second major of the year. Picking Scheffler to win is as close to a "safe" wager as bettors are going to find.

Collin Morikawa: +1600 to Win

2 of 4

At +1600, the odds are quite a bit more attractive for Morikawa. In fact, they feel a smidge lower than they probably should be. A poor start to the 2024 season—the 27-year-old missed the cut at both the Farmers Insurance Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational—may have something to do with Morikawa having longer odds than McIlroy and Schauffele.

Since reuniting with longtime instructor Rick Sessinghaus in May, though, Morikawa has started to return to form.

"When you have that and you can take a deep breath and know everything is going to be all right, it's like, yeah, this is right," Morikawa said, per Adam Schupak of Golfweek.

Morikawa has recorded top-10 finishes in five of his last six tournaments and fared very well at this year's first two majors. He tied for third at The Masters and fourth at the PGA Championship and figures to be in the mix on Sunday as well.

While Morikawa wasn't able to out-duel Scheffler last weekend, he should at least have an opportunity to do it at the U.S. Open. At +320, backing Morikawa for a top-five finish also feels like a strong play.

Hideki Matsuyama: +3500 to Win

Hideki Matsuyama has become a bit of a forgotten golfer over the past couple of months. A back injury forced him to withdraw from the Wells Fargo Championship in early May, and that was the first tournament in which he appeared after finishing tied for 38th at The Masters.

Matsuyama then finished tied for 35th at the PGA Championship and was again out of action until The Memorial.

However, Matsuyama appears to be healthy once again and back in top form. The 32-year-old finished tied for eighth last weekend, which marked his sixth top-13 finish of the year. Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational in February and recorded top-10 finishes at The Players Championship and the Valero Texas Open.

Assuming Matsuyama's health holds, his efficient play around the green should give him a legitimate chance to pull off an upset at Pinehurst. He's a sleeper to win it at +3500 but a very intriguing option for bettors who prefer the back a long shot.

Picking Matsuyama to finish in the top 10 at +330 is an even safer play and a solid hedge against picking him to win.

Alex Noren: +650 to Finish Top 10

Anyone looking to back a true dark horse should consider Alex Noren. The 41-year-old Swedish professional isn't likely to cash a +10,000 bet to win. He hasn't won a tournament since 2018 and missed the cut in three of four majors last year.

However, Noren remains a consistent competitor who can challenge for a top-10 finish. He missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open but recorded top-25 finishes in nine of his last 10 tournaments.

That stretch included two top-10 finishes, plus a tie for 12th at the PGA Championship and a final-round 65—Noren's best career round at a major.

"I've never hit it this good on the weekend and throughout a tournament and I showed to myself this weekend that I can compete up here," Noren said, per the DP World Tour's official website.

Though he only finished tied for 22nd at The Memorial, Noren's steady play on and around the green could have him in contention on Sunday. At +650 for a top-10 finish, Noren represents a solid sleeper play.
