The experiment was conducted during 2019-21 at Paroo and Saraiya blocks of Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, India to identify the nutrients status for crop management. Soil fertility inventory research was carried out in these two identified blocks (Paroo and Saraiyan) for generation of thematic soil fertility map. For nutrient assessment altogether 40 (forty) geo-referenced composite soil samples

An assessment of soil status of Hasanpur and Rosera blocks of Samastipur district of Bihar was carried out to determine the basic physico-chemical properties of the soil, based on which site-specific nutrient recommendations can be made so that problems of nitrate contamination in water of that area may be minimized. The study was carried out in four selected villages from each of the block. Results revealed that soils mostly belong to the textural class of sandy clay loam and sandy loam. Soils are alkaline in reaction, safe concerning electrical conductivity. Soil organic carbon contents varied from 0.26% to 0.61%. Available nitrogen, phosphorus (P 2 O 5) and potassium (K 2 O) contents of soils varied from 142.65 to 275.97, 19.76 to 34.61 and 136.60 to 237.58 kg ha-1 , respectively. Low organic carbon, low availability of available nitrogen and available phosphorus were identified to be the major soil-related crop production constraints of the study area.

Carbon Sequestration Potential of different Land Use Pattern in Calcareous Soils of Muzaffarpur District, Bihar

Carbon Sequestration Potential of different Land Use Pattern in Calcareous Soils of Muzaffarpur District, Bihar

Among the land use pattern, forest soils are an important component of the global C cycle and it store large amounts of organic carbon (OC). Comparing the carbon storage in various land use systems, required to assess organic carbon in the soils. In order to that, the study was conducted on the estimation of soil C stocks in three important land use systems viz. Mango orchards, cultivated and fallow lands in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. For the assessment of various soil properties, the soil samples were collected from three soil depth (0-15, 15-30 & 30-45cm) using soil core cutters. Among the different age of mango tree, the increased value of organic carbon obtained in 25 years old mango orchard than 10 and 20 years old trees respectively. The soil pH differed across the land use system, where, higher value was recorded in fallow land followed by cultivated land. However, lower pH was recorded in soils of mango orchard than other land use system may be due to addition of litter leaves of mango orchard. The higher concentrations of all micronutrients were recorded higher in surface soil. The information made by study the effects of different land use types on soil organic carbon stock is crucial for best land management practices and combating climate change and enhancing ecological restoration.

Problems of Saffron Marketing in Kashmir Valley

Binish Qadri

Kashmiri saffron is facing marketing problems due to its poor quality on account of traditional post-harvest techniques. Technologies are available which can ensure the best quality of Kashmiri saffron, for which it is famous in the world and creation of saffron spice park under national saffron mission is a step forward in this direction. The national saffron mission is likely to boost the overall saffron production of Kashmir from 15MT to 22MT. (Souvenir Saffron Exporters Brand, 2016). An expansion program in non-traditional areas will further enhance the overall production to about 60MT. Therefore, there is a need to provide the solution to the farmers for the better market which at present is unorganized. Improving the marketing value chain of saffron with structured marketing channels will definitely increase livelihood security of more than 16000 farm families which are associated with this trade directly or indirectly. The present study is, therefore, an attempt to highlight the problems of marketing of saffron in Kashmir valley so as to provide remedial measures and benefit the growers as much as possible and encourage their involvement in the saffron value chain.

Soil Fertility Evaluation to Adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture in Mambattu Village, Maduranthakam Block of Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India

2021 •

Sathya Velusamy

Assessment of soil fertility is essential to help identify strategies for sustainable agricultural production systems that decrease the negative environmental impact. The objective of this research study is to carry out a preliminary assessment of soil fertility status to adopt climate-smart agriculture to address the climate change challenges that adversely affect crop productivity and livelihoods of the farming community. The research was carried out in Mambattu village, Maduranthakam block of Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. A systematic set of twenty geo-referenced soil samples were collected from the study village using GPS (Global Positioning System) and analysed for pH, EC, available macro, secondary and micronutrients to develop a credible soil fertility index (SFI). The preliminary fertility data of Mambattu village revealed that the pH of soil samples varied from acidic to alkaline with about 40% as neutral while the electrical conductivity showed non-saline and medium st...

Status of Sulphur, Zinc and Boron in Onion Growing Soils of Dharwad Taluk, Karnataka, India

Manjunatha Hebbara

Survey was undertaken during rabi 2021-22, to study the sulphur, zinc and boron status in onion growing fields in selected villages of Dharwad taluk, Karnataka. One hundred surface soil samples were collected from selected ten villages of Dharwad taluk using GPS. The results revealed that soils were neutral to alkaline in reaction, low in total soluble salts, low to high organic carbon content, low in available nitrogen, medium in available phosphorus, potassium and sulphur and 49.00 and 77.00 per cent of the soils were deficient in DTPA extractable zinc and hot water soluble boron, respectively.
